Does God Punish Our Sin With Disaster, Troubles and Pain? #354 Why Do Bad Things Happen to Bad People?

In John 5, Jesus tells a paralyzed man that He has healed to stop sinning, "or something worse may happen to you." Does this mean that all of the bad things that have happened to us have occurred directly as a result of a particular sin?
